Mao Museum - Noreen and Catherine

Currency: Mao Zedong is regarded as a major historical figure by most of China. Mao Zedong, rather than being a celebrated political figure, represents the unified people. In this way, the symbols on Chinese currency also appear to be dedicated to abstract principles.

Mao Badge: Chairman Mao badges can be seen as icons of China’s Cultural Revolution which were worn by everyone except for ‘class enemies’ who were forbidden to wear  them. They were worn as an expression of loyalty to Chairman Mao and were mass-produced throughout China.

Mao Stamp: This stamp is called the "Great Victory of Cultural Revolution" and shows Chairman Mao and Lin Biao at a victory celebration in the countryside

Little Red Book: Also called "Quotations from Chairman Mao”, it is a book of selected statements from speeches and writings from Mao Zedong, former leader of the Chinese Communist Party. it was widely distributed during the Cultural Revolution and was considered to be one of the most published books in history.
Mao Statue: Located across from the Tiananmen-style people's park, the statue stands with his arm raised to welcome people who come to visit the city. The particular location in the heart of China's biggest represents it symbolism. The idea to build a giant Mao statue came during China's Cultural Revolution. The leaders at the time decided that the best way to declare their allegiance to Beijing was to build one of the largest statues of Mao in the country.

This artifact shows how people idolized Mao and viewd him as a god. In the picture they put Maos face on the sun symbolizing his power and the Chinese peoples dependence on him.
This is a painting that describes how many families in China incorporate Mao into their lives at home and how they worship their leader.
This photo represents The rowdy support of the Chinese Citizens that would do anything that Mao supported.

Here is an example of Mao Zedong’s typical suit. The four pockets represented the “Four Virtues”, the five buttons down the center represented the five branches of government (Yuans) and the three cuff buttons represented Sun Yat-sen’s Three Principles.

Above is a poster representing the Great Leap forward, which Mao Zedong lead. This event was important not only because it can be viewed as a bold economic project, but it also displayed to the Soviet Union that Chinese were as successful, if not more.

Mao encouraged literacy and urged for more women's rights. This poster is a slogan about secondary school, and they were on walls all throughout the cities, all with different messages.

People in the countryside studied Mao's ideas. He changed the outlook of the working people, produced a gigantic material force and brought about a new leap in agricultural production.

A medical worker giving shots to children. The sign in the background contains a Mao quotation: "actively prevent and heal people's illness, and carry out medical and health work for the people."

"A general store in Tsao Yang, one of the newly built suburbs of Shanghai. The population of this suburb has "leaped ahead," along with the accelerated production of Shanghai, having increased by seven thousand families since its birth."

"Modernization and economic success lead to increased mobility and wellbeing for all. It starts with a motor cycle and maybe ends with a car. The woman has worked in the fields, probably sprayed fruit trees with insecticide. Note her fashionable wristwatch!"

Map of the Long March
westshore.hs.brevard.k12.fl.us

This map illustrates Mao and the Communists' journey in order to escape the Nationalists. The March lasted about a year and many of the soldiers on the march died. However, the march was important because it saved the Communists party. Therefore, this map belongs in the museum because Mao's plan for escape may have cost many lives, but ultimately saved his movement.

Mao's forces are victorious, and the Communists reassert their power. This photo was taken on October 1, 1949 when Mao declared the establishment of the People's Republic of China. This photo would be in the museum because it marks the beginning of Mao's 27 year regime and the establishment of the government of China that still exists under the same title today.

Propaganda Poster: "Chairman Mao gives us a happy life, 1954"
Chairman Mao gives us a happy life, 1954
In order to control the potentially revolutionary peasants, Mao and the Communist party used propaganda posters to brainwash the masses. This poster depicts a happy middle-class Chinese family who are attributing their lifestyle to the picture of Mao above their table because the father is pointing to him. This would be in the museum because Mao's propaganda was ultimately and he was very well liked by the commoners.

In this picture, Beijing is being transformed into a modern city. The houses in the picture are old and run down, but after construction they will have four or five floor. In addition, the crowded and beaten down paths are going to be paved streets. This picture should be in the Museum because it reflects the positive changes under Mao's rule.

The Little Red Book

Picture from: jamesmys.blogspot.com

The Little Red Book was composed of various quotes by Chairman Mao. The book overs advice for various situations that one may encounter while being a follower of Mao. While this book was initially used to increase Mao's popularity among the soldiers, his book was widely circulated during the Cultural Revolution. This book would be in the museum because it is a symbol of Mao's rule and his influence over society.
